Newsletter Term 3 Week 2
Principal's Report
Dear Community,
Welcome back to Term 3. I hope that you all had a lovely holiday and got to enjoy some family time together.
Thank you to the parents who attended our information session on the 'Diocesan Approach to Reading' on Monday night. This was a chance for parents to understand the changes that have taken place in the way that we teach reading this year and have an understanding of how they can support their children in learning to read. We have seen much growth in our students with this new approach and we look forward to seeing the students continue to grow in the future.
As you will be aware, students in Year 3 and 5 completed NAPLAN testing in Term 1. The results from this testing have now been finalised and families will receive these reports by the end of the week. It was wonderful to see that our Year 3 students were above the national average in reading, writing, numeracy and grammar and punctuation. Our results also showed growth in our Year 3 students for reading and numeracy.
Next week is Catholic Education Week. This will be a time to celebrate all the wonderful things about being part of St Joseph's. I'm particularly excited to see the students engaging in acts of service next week. Each class has nominated an activity they would like to do for others in our school or wider community. This is a great way for students to reach out and do something for others out of the goodness of their heart.
Over the next few weeks, we will be focussing on the learning behaviour of 'Persistent Parakeet'. This learning behaviour connects with the Mary MacKillop quote; "A little patience will in the end be rewarded." This is very relevant to this learning behaviour as it is all about not giving up when things get difficult and continuing to try new strategies. It's about knowing that you will come to be able to do the task that you are trying to do, but that it may take a little bit of time.
I look forward to another great term ahead and seeing all the wonderful things our students can achieve.
God Bless,
Michelle
From the APRE
Welcome back to Term 3. This is always a very busy term for us, with many significant events taking place in our Religious calendar.
Thank you to the 3/4 class for leading us in a beautiful NAIDOC Week liturgy last Friday. They taught us about the theme for this year's NAIDOC Week and what that means for us as a school community.
Next week, we will celebrate Catholic Education Week. The theme this year is 'Communities of faith, hope and love.' Next week we will be celebrating Catholic Education Week and all the wonderful things about being part of St Joseph's in a number of ways.
- Catholic Education Week Mass on Tuesday 23rd at 9:30am
- Each class will be participating in a service activity next week
- Grandparent's Day on Thursday 25th from 11am-1pm
- Pupil Free Day on Friday 26th
We look forward to our celebrations next week.
Also coming up in the next few weeks is Mary MacKillop Feast Day. This is a day when we celebrate and reflect on the life and work of Mary MacKillop, who is a big part of the values that we teach at St Joseph's. This is a very big day for us, beginning with a Mass, our Feast Day celebrations and then our relay in the afternoon. It is time to start collecting those 20c coins!
Prep Term 2 Recap
Hi everyone,
Wow, this term has been so busy! Singing at the ANZAC service, running the Mother’s day liturgy, participating in the Athletics Carnival, performing at the Dalby Eisteddfod and of course, learning in the classroom! The Preppies have managed Term 2 so well, particularly due to all these interruptions.
Please continue to practice numbers up to 20 with your child, letters and sound of the alphabet, and reading/writing CVC and CCVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant and consonant-consonant-vowel-consonant). It is very important that your children are getting constant exposure to numbers and alphabet, as this will set them up for success in the rest of their schooling (prep is such a crucial year as they master these basic concepts!).
Have a lovely and restful break – you and your children deserve it! I look forward to seeing you all bright and fresh next term – in a term that hopefully won’t be as jam packed!
Kind Regards,
Grace
Term 2 fun...
Year 3/4 Term 2 Recap
Hello family and friends ,
Happy end of term! This term has been extremely busy and has flown by, but the students have handled this very well. You should all be very proud of your kids in ¾!
In English, we have stayed busy right until the last minute writing an informative text about their chosen sport. Students loved this topic, and used it to their advantage to write some great facts about how the game works. In terms of reading, starting ‘fluency pairs’ has given students the opportunity to improve their accuracy and reading pace, which we will continue using next term. If you could ensure they continue reading over the holidays, that would be a great help for practicing decoding skills and understanding texts.
Maths has kept students working hard, covering multiplication and division, fractions, and money. We are now revising addition and subtraction, and ¾ are challenging themselves by finding strategies to identify missing values in equations.
In Science, students explored heat and how this transfers between objects, and the different ways heat can be created. In HASS, they have explored the importance of Country and Place to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and quickly learned the symbols included on our national flag. We have been doing some Digital Technologies, exploring data systems including both input and outputs and what these look like in our everyday lives. Students even choreographed their own dance representing a ‘zone’ from the Zones of Regulation which I was very impressed with! They worked hard to get this done and explain their working out.
Next term should be an exciting time to continue growing their learning in all learning areas. We will start the term exploring and practicing creative writing in English, and will cover measurement and shapes in Maths.
Have a wonderful and restful holiday!
Thank you,
Georgia Tocknell
Year 3/4 fun ...
Year 5/6 News
Dear Families
It’s been a great start to our third term so far. In English students are learning about informative texts. They are learning about the structure and features of an informative text as well as how to identify them. Students have been practising their skills of identifying the various important elements of informative texts and learning how to create their own using quality sources. They have also started learning about referencing systems, what’s important to include in references and where to find them. These skills they are building are vital to the continuation of their education, especially as they progress to high school.
HASS is also proving to be a interesting subject for them this term. Year 5 students are learning about Pangea and how the Earth has changed over the course of its long life. Students are learning about the directions the countries moved and how they took their current shape, as well as what caused the breaking up of the super continent to begin with. Year 6 students are learning about the Asian continent. They are learning about the various countries on the continent and about the location and diversity of these countries. Students are also learning Asia's location in relation to Australia and the impacts it has on us.
In Health, students are all learning about the value of diversity, respect, and inclusion. Students are taking the time to think about the different types of people in the world and are considering how their world can be altered to better suit those with diverse needs. This unit is based on students thinking about people who have lives so vastly different to their own that they struggle to comprehend the difficulties they face everyday. Students learn about the value of respecting others and about how they can impact the world around them to make positive changes that demonstrate their naturally inclusive tendencies.
Thanks
Mr Riley
