Newsletter Term 2 Week 8
Principal's Report
Dear Community,
I want to firstly begin by congratulating everyone on their wonderful participation at Athletics Carnival last Friday. What I noticed most on the day was how the students encouraged each other, cheered for each other and celebrated the success of their friends and peers. There were also moments where students would comfort each other, carry their food for them and help them to finish a job. This connects so strongly to our 'Welcoming Wagtail' learning behaviour and the Mary MacKillop quote that accompanies this 'Serving others is the best sacrifice we can make.' It's amazing to see so many of our students displaying these values in their day to day activities.
Next week, we have quite a busy week, with lots of events happening for our students. We are very excited to be performing in our first eisteddfod next week and we look forward to seeing our students achieve success with their music endeavours. We also have many of our students heading off to compete for St Joseph's at Gore Hwy Athletics. Our final event next week will be Under 8's Day for our Prep-Year 2 students.
At this time of the term, our teachers and students are busy finalising assessment in preparation for the end of the term. This term our teachers will be reporting on student achievement. Report Cards will be distributed in Week 10 via the Sentral App. Reports are a great way for parents to keep on top of what students have learnt over the term and how they are tracking for the year. They are also a helpful way of knowing how students engage in the learning process and their contributions and efforts in the classroom. These factors contribute greatly to overall student achievement, so are an important part of the learning cycle.
Finally, I wanted to remind everyone that this Saturday is our Cent Sale. This will be taking place at the Cultural Centre from 4:00pm. The prize draws will start at 6:00pm. A big thank you to all of our sponsors for their very generous prize donations. It is going to be a wonderful event. A special mention to our PPF for their hours of hard work that has gone in to make this event possible. Thank you for your continued efforts to support the students and staff at our school.
God Bless,
Michelle

Justice Challenge
This week we celebrate the feast of Saint Anthony of Padua. We usually associate Saint Anthony with prayers for intercession when we have lost something. But Saint Anthony was also a compelling preacher. And his message was often against greed and for charity towards the poor. That earned him the title of “Friend of the Poor.” Your challenge this week is to be a friend of the poor in your community. What can you do – individually, as a family, as a group of friends – to help someone in poverty? Choose a corporal work of mercy and respond by feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, or sheltering the homeless!
Creation Care Tips
Let us think for a moment about how we use water. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports, “Water scarcity impacts 40% of the world’s population, and as many as 700 million people are at risk of being displaced as a result of drought by 2030.” This week, look into ways of cutting your water usage. Reduce outside watering (drip irrigation can help a lot) and do so in the mornings or evenings, when less water will evaporate. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Switch to a low-flow shower head or toilet and use tap aerators. Monitor your water usage on your bill and seek out options for free water audits.
Year 5/6 News
Dear families,
This term has been another busy one for the year 5 and 6 students. In class we have been building our mathematics skills by learning how to multiply large numbers by two-digit numbers. The students know how to achieve this using various methods such as the area method and the lattice method. In maths they have also been practicing their skills of solving multiplication problems as word problems and giving the corresponding answer in word-format. These are skills they will utilise throughout their lives, so they are quite fortunate to have picked the concept up so easily.
In science, students have been learning all about energy. Due to this they have greatly increased their knowledge bases on what energy is and all the many forms it takes in our lives. In technology, we have been discussing user stories and design criteria. Students have been given the chance to apply their knowledge in lessons by describing their user stories, and how to write a design criteria that matches their story. They have enjoyed these lessons which has so far consisted of them designing their own drink bottles, homes, and instruments.
One of the most important elements of this term so far has been our physical education. Students have done both cross-country and athletics, with a few students making it onto the next level for both. The students have spent their PE lessons practicing their forms and techniques. For some students, these events are still relatively new, so the practice during PE classes was greatly appreciated. The students who attended the athletics carnival all came back with joyous reports about how much they enjoyed the day.
