Year 3/4 News
Hello family and friends!
We have had a great start to the last term of 2023. Our first week flew by and swimming everyday this week has been tiring, but so much fun!
Year 3/4 have been busy getting straight into some work, completing assessments from last term in English and Maths. For English we were finishing off our informative text unit, with students choosing their favourite country to research, note take and write about. I have loved learning about the countries of their choice and they have created some great texts about a topic they are interested in. This always helps with the sometimes mundane task of writing! Combining all the skills necessary to write a full text is always tricky, but these kids have done a great job of working through the process and checking their work at the end. We will start to move into our new unit focusing on persuasive writing next week, and throughout the term students will also be exposed to poetry and its features.
In Maths, the 3/4s finished off our unit on chance and probability with an assessment last week requiring them to experiment with data, predicting and answering questions. This links well with our next topic which is data collection and representation, and I am excited to continue completing some fun experiments and surveys, getting other classes involved where we can! The rest of the term will focus on topics such as angles and map work.
For science and design technologies, we will be completing a unit focusing on materials and what is suitable for different uses. Hopefully we will be making a raft of some sort using different materials to compare and find which ones would be best! I will let you know in the coming weeks if the kids need any materials from home.
The kids are doing so well in swimming, and we are very excited for the carnival tomorrow! It will be a great day out at the pool.
I am looking forward to the rest of term 4, and to continue watching these kids grow inside and outside the classroom! Have a great rest of your week, and I will see those of you at the swimming carnival.
Thank you,
Georgia
From the APRE
Welcome back to Term 4. Although this is a shorter term, we have much to pack into it. Coming up in the next few weeks we will be celebrating All Saints Day with a mass at the Church on Wednesday 1st November at 9:30am. We also have Family Mass on Sunday 5th November at 9:30am. This term, Family Mass will be celebrated at the school hall. It would be great to see families attend.
The big one for this term is our Graduation Mass, which will be held on the last day of term, Friday 1st December at 11:00am at the Church. This will be followed by a shared lunch.
This month is also Mission Month and over the next few weeks, students will be engaging in lessons around the themes of creation, wellbeing, service, opportunity, peace and participation. We will also have a crazy sock day to raise money for Catholic Missions.
God Bless,
Michele Sanders

Dear Commmunity
The year has certainly flown by, we can’t believe the end of the school year is only 8 weeks away! This year the PPF has decided to hire the function centre at the Mill Inn Tavern for our awards night and end of year celebrations. This will take all of the pressure off committee members, parents and helpers to be able to enjoy this night together, more information about this will be available soon.
This is just one example of how the PPF is able to support the school and families through our fundraising efforts throughout the year. Another is our school camp, this year our year 5/6 class was just a bit too large for the usual mini bus and trailer set up, so the PPF contributed $3000 to pay for a coach and driver to get the campers to their destination in comfort and safety, saving our parents the burden of this extra expense and ensuring the camp remained affordable for families.
As always, we welcome new members to our meetings, the next being Monday the 16th at 5pm. Our current committee will be standing down from their 2 years holding positions next year, so we ask that families begin to consider putting their hand up for a role in 2024, PPF is a vital part of our school.
Finally, I would like to congratulate Mrs Michele Sanders on her appointment to principal of Joeys commencing in 2024. I enjoyed the opportunity to represent the parent body at the recent interviews, and I was pleased to see the results from the recent ‘vision for a principal’ survey, as a central component of the process. I am sure Michele will provide excellent leadership and guidance in the coming years for our wonderful school.
We will be hosting a farewell drinks afternoon for Mr Lawson Short later this term as we say thank you for his 5 years with Joeys and send him off with well wishes for his new role in Toowoomba next year. Details of this will be announced in the next week or two.
Hope to see you on the 16th in the school hall.

5/6 School Camp - Lennox Heads
Last week, our 5/6 students enjoyed a week away at Lennox Heads on the New South Wales coast. They participated in many activities including: raft building, beach games, body boarding and stand up paddle boarding. It was a great week and the students learnt lots about teamwork and resilience.
